A law clerk's duties vary a little depending on where he or she works. In general, if you become a law clerk you would report to a lawyer or judge and be responsible for helping them prepare legal documentation, which may well involve preparatory research work. You might undertake this in a library or on the Internet. If you become a law clerk you may find employment in a number of different places such as courts of law, private law firms, corporate legal departments, even large insurance companies, or real estate firms. You may also find opportunities within federal, state or local government offices.

A bachelor's degree is generally considered to be a minimum requirement to become a law clerk. A degree such as criminal justice, or law would be appropriate. Personal skills that are sought after are good organization, excellent written and verbal communication, a methodical approach, logical thought, and being a good problem solver. Expect to work under pressure and toward deadlines on occasions to meet the demands of your employer. This may mean working unusual or late hours occasionally, especially if a court case is due or there is a change in legal direction. Much of your work will be office based although occasionally you may need to travel to court or to collect documents.
