The relatively recently created Department of Homeland Security employs US border patrol agents. If you become a border patrol agent your primary responsibilities would be to monitor part of over 8,000 miles of international land and water boundaries. You will be responsible for the illegal entry or exit of persons or materials. This may include contraband such as narcotics and explosives or simply goods on which duty has not been paid. You might also be involved in the prevention of trafficking in humans or drugs. If individuals do slip through, you may become involved in tracking them down and returning them to their country of origin. If you become a border patrol agent, expect to spend much of your working day outdoors.

Like most other police officer roles education in a military or police academy is a recognized and well-trodden route to become a border patrol agent. You could also offer a relevant degree e.g. criminal justice or similar or relevant work experience. Any combination or work experience and academic achievement will be considered so long as it is relevant to the role. You will need to prove that you can work under pressure, make decisions, and be able to take control of a situation. Most new recruits are required to pass a three-part exam in reasoning and language skills, hold a valid driver's license and be between 20 and 37 years of age.
