Working for the Department of Homeland Security, border patrol agents are responsible for protecting and monitoring the 8,000 miles of international water and land boundaries surrounding the United States. Some border patrol agents work exclusively indoors, providing the administrative and logistical support for agents in the field. They use standard office equipment in addition to a range of sophisticated tracking and monitoring technologies to provide real-time data to all relevant parties within the Department. Others work directly on the borders, interacting with travelers as they cross international boundaries in and out of the country. In a nutshell, border patrol agents are responsible for detecting and preventing the illegal transfer of any restricted materials or individuals across international lines, including:- Counterfeit goods
- Weapons
- Illegal immigrants
- Unaccompanied minors
- Narcotics
- Regulated merchandise
- Sex workers
- Known criminals from other jurisdictions
What Education Do You Need to Become a Border Patrol Agent?
The preferred educational track is a four-year bachelor's degree with at least one year of relevant experience in a related field. In some locales, however, it is possible to apply with an associate's degree if you have extensive professional experience (more than one year).
After being recruited, prospective agents typically receive 20 months of on-site training before being released into the field. Testing during this training largely determines where you are stationed. Proficiency in computer science, for example, might make you better suited for back-office support. Similarly, fluency in two or more languages could make you a prime candidate for field work at the border. No matter where you are stationed, however, it is important that you remain physically fit and mentally alert. Becoming a border patrol agent requires excellent attention to detail and tremendous stamina, whether you are behind a desk or near international lines.
