Paralegals do much of what lawyers do: they draft contracts and legal documents; conduct research regarding laws and past cases, then write reports based on that research; keep track of the details of each client's case; stay on top of current legal issues; and work closely with clients. Although paralegals can't give legal advice or represent clients in court - duties reserved for lawyers - many law firms and corporations are hiring paralegals instead of lawyers, to assist with legal matters while minimizing expenses. That's why the Bureau of Labor Statistics says that paralegal jobs should grow much faster than average through 2014. |

Paralegals experience the rewards of assisting clients and engaging in legal issues, without completing three years of law school, and while still enjoying a 40-hour workweek. Many people still go on to enter law school, and paralegal courses are excellent preparation for that as well. Paralegal courses will help you to strengthen your research and writing skills. You'll learn about legal resources, such as journals, case summaries, government documents, and the online database LEXIS/NEXIS, and then you'll use them to draft legal briefs and other documents. Paralegal courses help to improve your communications, organizational, and computer skills. Once you've completed your certificate, or two- or four-year degree program, you may intern at a law firm or other legal organization, which is a great way to gain hands-on experience and network with other legal professionals. Paralegals specializing in fields like corporate, intellectual property, or real estate law will enjoy the best employment opportunities. |
