Upon release from prison, it's unrealistic to expect ex-convicts to transition easily into the next phase of their lives, or that they won't be tempted to repeat old, destructive behaviors. That's where parole officers come in. Parole officers monitor those who have been released from prison, keeping a close on eye on their daily patterns and seeing to it that they make an easy, gradual transition into a healthy new life.

Becoming a Parole Officer
Because the work of a parole officer may involve aspects of police and investigative work, as well as certain counseling methods, aspects of social work, and elements of management and supervision, those interested in this career would be wise to pursue an interdisciplinary major, such as criminal justice. The majority of employers of parole officers require that candidates hold at least a bachelor's degree in criminal justice, social work, or a related field.

What You Can Expect
In addition to a four-year degree, most employers require that candidates complete specialized parole officer training, generally leading to a certification exam. Parole officer training will prepare you for the unique demands of this profession, including techniques for inmate supervision and communication, psychological counseling, crisis management, certain administrative duties, and even self-defense.

Once finished with parole officer training, you can usually expect to work for a year or two, on a probationary basis, as a trainee with a law enforcement agency. You can also expect to undergo routine psychological and physical examinations on a yearly basis, and to regularly update your parole officer training, to make sure that your skills remain at their sharpest.
